You have a good clip and one upload to plan. Someone on the team says TikTok, someone else says Reels, and both have a screenshot that proves them right. The 2026 data does pick a first stop, and it is not the same stop for every clip.
On the 2026 numbers, TikTok wins on views per post, reach to strangers and how long a clip keeps working; Instagram Reels wins on early speed, on view growth this year and on shares. Instagram Reels and TikTok are both full-screen vertical video feeds that use a recommendation algorithm to pick what each viewer sees. Here, a clip is a short vertical video cut from a longer video, stream or podcast, and reach means how many different people see it, not how many of them like it.
More people use Instagram, but audience size is not what decides a clip's reach. Instagram has 3 billion monthly users (Reuters, September 2025) and TikTok says it has more than 1 billion (TikTok, May 2026). Neither publishes a Reels-only count. Sensor Tower data reported by CNBC put Reels at 46% of time spent in the US Instagram app in 2025. What moves a single clip is the feed it lands in, which is what the rest of this page compares.
| TikTok | Instagram Reels | |
|---|---|---|
| Average views per video (Metricool, 2026) | About 32,900 | About 23,100 |
| Average views per brand post (Socialinsider, 2025) | 6,496 | 3,403 (all Instagram post types) |
| Main way strangers find a clip | For You feed, 72.70% of video views | Reels tab, Explore and Trial Reels |
| How fast views arrive (Metricool) | 96% of reach in the first 10 days | About 65% of a Reel's views in the first 3 days |
| Views per post, early 2026 vs early 2025 | Down 31.30% | Up 27% (all Instagram) |
| Signals the platform names | Interactions, and whether people finish the video | Watch time, likes per reach, sends per reach |
| Best job for a clip | Reaching people who have never heard of you | Re-reaching followers and getting shared in DMs |
The first stop depends on what the clip is for: new people point to TikTok, warm followers and DM shares point to Reels. Answer three questions and the picker puts the two uploads in order. It follows the same rules as the goal table further down, every reason names its source, and it never predicts views.
Pick an answer to each question. The phone that steps forward is where the clip goes first.
Post first on TikTok.
Then post a clean, native version on Instagram Reels.
TikTok's For You feed drove 72.70% of video views, and TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in what it recommends.

Each phone shows its platform's published timing: TikTok, 96% of reach in the first 10 days (Metricool 2026 TikTok study); Instagram Reels, About 65% of views in the first 3 days (Metricool, Instagram vs TikTok 2026).
TikTok does, and two large 2026 datasets agree on that even though they measure different accounts.
Metricool's short-video report analysed 6,177,375 videos from 375,462 accounts over 90 days. TikTok averaged about 32,900 views per video and Instagram Reels about 23,100, as Net Influencer reported from the report. By our arithmetic that is about 43% more views on TikTok, close to Metricool's own "up to 42%", or about 30% fewer on Reels. Metricool's own Instagram study puts it as nearly 30% fewer views and 14% fewer interactions on Reels.
Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks track brand pages instead. Its 2025 averages put TikTok at 6,496 views per post and Instagram at 3,403, about 1.9 times more on TikTok. The Instagram figure covers every post type, not only Reels, so treat it as a rough check.
The gap is real, but it is a gap of degree. A Reel still gets about seven views for every ten a TikTok gets. That is not a reason to skip Reels. It is a reason to know which job each platform does.
Averages also hide single accounts. In one r/socialmedia thread, a creator reports several Reels passing a million views while their TikToks struggle to break 1,000. If your own numbers run the other way, believe your numbers, then check the reasons in the FAQ below.
TikTok is built to show videos to people who do not follow you. In Metricool's 2026 TikTok study, the For You feed drove 72.70% of video views. TikTok said in June 2020 that neither follower count nor past hit videos are direct factors in what it recommends, and that finishing a longer video from beginning to end is a strong sign of interest. A new account can reach strangers from its first good clip.
Instagram shows Reels to non-followers too, through the Reels tab, Explore and Trial Reels, but it ranks them on different signals. Trial Reels, which Meta launched on 10 December 2024, go to non-followers first, so you can test a clip on strangers before your followers see it. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, named watch time, likes and sends as the top three ranking signals and told creators to watch likes per reach and sends per reach. Likes count slightly more with followers; sends count slightly more with non-followers.
A Reel peaks fast and a TikTok has a longer tail. Metricool found about 70% of Instagram views arrive in the first three days, and 65% for Reels alone (Metricool, July 2026). A TikTok video gets 96% of its reach and nearly 98% of its interactions in its first ten days (Metricool, May 2026).
Post when your followers are online, then plan the next clip instead of waiting for a late spike. The best time to post on Instagram has the windows.
Views keep arriving for days after posting, so a quiet first day is not a verdict. The best time to post on TikTok has the windows.
Per post, yes. Metricool's 2026 TikTok study compared January and February 2026 with the same months of 2025: video views fell 31.30%, reach fell 28.73% and interactions fell 31.17%, while 72.10% more videos were posted. More videos are splitting the same attention, so the average video gets less.
Instagram moved the other way, but the per-video lead still sits with TikTok. Instagram views rose 27% over the same months (Net Influencer), and TikTok still averaged more views per video than Reels in Metricool's later short-video report. Fewer views per post is not fewer views in total either: an account that posts more good clips gets more chances at a breakout.
TikTok, on Metricool's numbers. In its 2026 study, 16.47% of TikTok accounts moved up to a bigger follower tier, more than on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, X or Pinterest. On the same measure Instagram's figure was 8.93% (Metricool).
Instagram is stronger at getting a clip passed from person to person. Reels led on shares at every account size in Metricool's short-video report, which fits what Mosseri said about sends: on Instagram, people pass clips to friends in DMs.
Engagement rate is the most quoted TikTok vs Instagram number and the least fair one, because the two rates are not built the same way. Socialinsider counts likes, comments, shares and saves for TikTok, but only likes and comments for Instagram, so part of the gap is a formula gap.
| TikTok | ||
|---|---|---|
| What Socialinsider's engagement rate counts | Likes, comments, shares and saves | Likes and comments |
| Average shares per brand post, 2025 (Socialinsider) | 248 | 45 |
| Shares across creators and brands (Metricool) | Behind | Ahead at every account size |
Shares show how far two datasets can split. Brand pages in Socialinsider's data shared far more on TikTok, while Metricool's wider sample, which includes creators, found Reels ahead. Use engagement rate to compare your own clips on one platform, and views and reach to compare platforms. The full benchmark tables are in our short-form video statistics.
Both, in most cases, with a different first stop for each goal. This is the table the picker above follows.
| Your goal | Post first on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reach people who have never heard of you | TikTok | The For You feed drove 72.70% of TikTok video views, and follower count is not a direct factor |
| Re-reach people who already follow you | Instagram Reels | Likes count slightly more with followers on Instagram |
| Get a clip shared person to person | Instagram Reels | Reels led on shares in Metricool's report, and sends help reach non-followers |
| Keep a clip getting views for more than a few days | TikTok | A TikTok video gets 96% of its reach across its first ten days |
| Test a new format on strangers first | Instagram Trial Reels | Trial Reels go to non-followers first |
Posting your own clip on both apps is normal; the catch is the file. Instagram does not recommend Reels with logos from other apps, so export a fresh copy without the TikTok watermark. The originality rules are in our guide to Instagram's unoriginal content policy, and the posting plan across platforms is in short-form video distribution. How to cut each version is in how to clip on TikTok and how to clip on Instagram.
The platform sets how far one post travels; the number of accounts posting sets how many audiences hear about you at all. On Lumina Clippers campaigns, clips go out natively on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and X, and the network has delivered 18B+ verified views across them.
The working rule is not to pick one app and hope. Each creator cuts a native version of the moment, writes a fresh hook and caption, and posts it for the people who follow them. TikTok brings the strangers and Reels brings the shares and the warm audience, so one moment gets many separate shots at reach. We do not publish a TikTok against Reels split of those views, because the campaign dashboards report totals.
Podcast platform: episodes cut into vertical clips and posted natively across TikTok and Instagram Reels
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| For You feed | TikTok's main feed of recommended videos, mostly from accounts the viewer does not follow |
| Reels tab | Instagram's full-screen feed of short videos, mixing accounts you follow with recommended ones |
| Explore | Instagram's page of recommended posts from accounts the viewer does not follow |
| Trial Reels | Reels shown to non-followers first, so you can test a clip before followers see it |
| Sends per reach | How many people sent a Reel to someone, divided by how many people saw it |
| Reach | How many different accounts saw a post |
| Engagement rate | Interactions divided by followers or views; each tool counts it a little differently |
