Descript Review: The Editor Is Superb. Getting Clips Seen Is Still Your Job.

How we checked: we read Descript's pricing page on both billing modes, its help centre on billing, clips and publishing, its terms and its Trustpilot page on 28 October 2026. Prices change; check the live page before you buy. We run Lumina Clippers.

Lumina Clippers is a clipping specialist. Our team cuts the clips, checks every one against the brief, and 62,900+ vetted clippers post them on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and X. The decision is whether you want to edit and upload, or hand over the long-form file and have clippers post it.

01

Editing Video Like a Doc Is Descript's Gift, and Clipping Is One Button Among Many

Descript's text-based editing is strong for dialogue-driven content. You edit video by editing a transcript. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are built in. Underlord is the AI co-editor. Create Clips produces 1 to 20 clips. The editor is strong. Clipping is one feature among many.

The workflow is clear. You upload or record. You edit by deleting words from the transcript. The video follows. Studio Sound cleans the audio. Remove Filler Words cuts the ums and ahs. Underlord assists with the edit. Create Clips finds moments and produces up to 20 clips. The output is a set of files. Getting those files in front of people who do not already follow you is a separate job.

Lumina Clippers does not edit. Our team cuts the clips and 62,900+ vetted clippers post them. The job is reach, not editing. If the edit is the problem, Descript fits. If the audience is the problem, the clipper network starts with audiences that already exist. The two solve different problems. Some buyers keep both.

Which steps each one does

Scope, not quality: the steps Descript's help centre describes, next to the steps Lumina Clippers runs. With Descript, posting to Shorts, TikTok and Reels is a download and an upload you do yourself.

02

Upload: Every Media Minute Counts Against Your Plan, Whether You Transcribe It or Not

Descript's pricing page lists media minutes and AI credits that reset each cycle. The Free plan includes 60 media minutes and 100 AI credits given once. Paid plans include 10, 30 or 40 media hours and 400, 800 or 1,500 AI credits a month. Every media minute counts against the plan, whether you transcribe it or not.

Unused media minutes and AI credits do not roll over into the next cycle. Upgrading does not reset what you have already used. Top-ups, sold only on Creator and Business, carry over month to month and expire 12 months after purchase. The allowance is monthly. The unused portion does not carry forward. A 90-minute webinar uses 90 minutes of the monthly allowance even if you only keep 10 minutes of clips.

03

Ask Underlord: Even a Chat Message Spends Credits, and No Run Has a Fixed Price

Underlord is Descript's AI co-editor. A chat message spends credits. Descript's help centre does not list a fixed credit cost for an Underlord run. The cost varies by the task. There is no published price per run.

Create Clips is one of the actions that spends credits. The number of clips and the length affect the cost. Top-ups are available on Creator and Business if you run out. They are non-refundable. The published difference is that the credit cost is not fixed in advance. You see the usage after the run.

Lumina Clippers does not charge by credit. The price is quoted on the strategy call. $5,000 minimum. No multi-month lock-in. One price covers the full job. The difference is credits that vary by task, or one quote that covers the campaign.

04

Pick Your Clips: Descript's Own Page Says They (Might) Go Viral (Maybe)

Descript's clips page states the clips "(might) go viral (maybe)." The parenthetical is theirs. Create Clips produces 1 to 20 clips of 10 seconds to 5 minutes in 9:16 or 1:1. The feature finds moments. It does not guarantee reach.

The clips are cut. Whether they reach people who do not already follow you is a separate question. Descript's own page marks the uncertainty. The parenthetical is not a disclaimer added later. It is on the page.

Lumina Clippers' team cuts the clips and reviews every post against the brief before 62,900+ vetted clippers post them. The reach starts from audiences that already exist. The difference is AI-selected clips you upload, or clips cut by a team and posted by clippers who already have accounts.

05

Publish: YouTube Gets the Long Cut, While Shorts and TikTok Get a Download Button

Descript publishes long-form video to YouTube channels you own, to podcast hosts and to video hosts such as Wistia. Its help centre states YouTube Shorts are not supported. TikTok and Instagram Reels are not on its list of destinations. You download the clip and upload it yourself.

Direct publishing covers destinations you already own. Shorts, TikTok and Reels require a download and an upload. The file leaves Descript. The upload happens on the platform. The reach starts from the accounts you already have. A brand that needs clips on Shorts, TikTok and Reels will handle the upload. Descript does not post them.

The help centre lists destinations for long-form publishing. YouTube channels you own are included. Podcast hosts are included. Video hosts such as Wistia are included. Shorts are not. TikTok is not. Instagram Reels is not. The list is on the help centre. The gap is on the help centre.

Lumina Clippers' team cuts the clips and 62,900+ vetted clippers post them on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and X. The clips post from creator accounts. You do not upload them. The difference is direct publishing to a limited set of destinations, or clippers who post to the platforms where short-form lives. The reach is not limited to the brand's existing followers.

06

The Bill Behind Each Step: Seats Priced Per Person and a Saving Smaller Than the Banner

Descript bills each person a month plus AI credits, and its annual saving is smaller than the banner on Creator and Business.

Descript plans at a glance

Descript's pricing page lists Hobbyist, Creator and Business plans. Seats are priced per person. The banner states "Saving up to 35% over monthly plan." The saving varies by plan. Check both toggles on the day before you buy.

Hobbyist is one person. Creator is up to three. Business is up to five. Additional people are billed separately. The media hours and AI credits scale with the plan. The Free plan is one person with 60 media minutes and 100 AI credits given once. The paid plans increase the allowance and remove the watermark.

The banner saving is largest on Hobbyist. It is smaller on Creator and Business. The annual price is lower than the monthly price. The difference is not the same percentage on every plan. Check the live page before you buy. The banner is on the page. The prices are on the page.

Descript planMonthly, per personAnnual, per personPeopleMediaAI credits

Hobbyist: 24 to 16 USD33%
Creator: 35 to 24 USD31%
Business: 65 to 50 USD23%

Annual saving per person a month, monthly price to annual price, as Descript's pricing page lists them. The percentages and bar lengths are our own arithmetic on those prices, rounded down, drawn against the 35% banner.

What the price covers

The paid plans include media hours and AI credits. Top-ups are available on Creator and Business. The total depends on seats, media volume and credit usage. A team of three on Creator billed monthly is higher than one person on Hobbyist. A team of five on Business is higher again. The price scales with seats.

Lumina Clippers quotes one custom price per campaign. $5,000 minimum. No multi-month lock-in. One price covers clipper payouts, clip review, distribution, view verification and reporting. There is no setup or platform fee. The price is quoted on the strategy call. The difference is a subscription that scales with seats and credits, or one quote that covers the campaign.

Changed Your Mind? Descript's Refund Clock Runs Out After 48 Hours

Descript's help centre allows plan refunds within 48 hours of the invoice date and Editor seat refunds within 7 days. Top-ups are non-refundable. It gives no prorated refunds for unused time. Cancelling an annual plan halfway refunds nothing. Test on the Free plan before you pay.

The refund window is short. After 48 hours, the plan is locked for the cycle. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing cycle. There is no proration. The Free plan is the test before you pay. The Free plan includes 60 media minutes and 100 one-time credits.

Lumina Clippers publishes no refund policy. There is no multi-month lock-in. Billing is on verified views. The difference is a 48-hour window, or no lock-in and billing on verified views.

  1. Open the Plan tab

In Descript, open App Settings and go to the Plan tab.

  2. Choose Downgrade to Free

Click Change plan and choose Downgrade to Free.

  3. Give a reason and confirm

Pick a reason for leaving and confirm the cancellation.

  4. Use the rest of the cycle

Your plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle. No prorated refund is given for the time left.

4.6 on G2, 2.6 on Trustpilot: Praise for the Editor, Anger Over Credits and Bugs

Descript's homepage and G2 listings show 4.6. Trustpilot lists 2.6 from approximately 290 reviews. The gap is on their public pages. Trustpilot's AI summary notes bugs, glitches, export failures and lag. G2 notes praise for the editor and some performance issues.

The scores differ by platform. The editor receives praise. Credits and stability receive complaints. Both are visible on the review sites. Lumina Clippers lists 5.0 on Clutch. Featured in Forbes across two linked articles. The proof is named campaign results. The difference is a split between review platforms, or one score on Clutch with linked Forbes articles.

Descript or Lumina Clippers? You Edit and Upload, or Our Team Cuts and Clippers Post

Descript fits if the edit is the problem and you are comfortable uploading the clips yourself. Lumina Clippers fits if the audience is the problem and you want one team to cut and check the clips. Some buyers keep both.

Keep Descript If Your Problem Is the Edit, Not the Audience

Descript fits if the edit is the bottleneck and you are comfortable uploading the clips yourself. The text-based editing is strong. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words save time. Underlord assists. If the audience is the problem, the clipper network starts with audiences that already exist. The two solve different problems. Some buyers keep both.

Keep Descript for the edit. Use Lumina if the next problem is the audience. The clips leave Descript as files. Getting them in front of people who do not already follow you is a separate job. Lumina Clippers' team cuts the clips and clippers post them. Most campaigns go live 24 to 72 hours after the call.

Answer the threeVertical, how you want to work, and the budget shape. Those three decide a shortlist more reliably than any list of features, and nothing here is scored.

Whichever way it lands, find the step where your clips stall before you pay for either. A fit read is a shortlist, not a decision.

A fit guide from your three answers, not a ranking and not a judgement on either product. Nothing here scores, tests or audits anybody, and both companies are real businesses whose work is described on their own sites; the one that does not fit your answers may be exactly right for a different brief.

Searching for a Descript Alternative? Find the Step Where Your Clips Stall

If the edit is the problem, compare other editors. If the views are the problem, a managed clipping agency fits. Lumina Clippers' team cuts the clips and 62,900+ vetted clippers post them. Custom pricing from USD 5,000, no lock-in. Send the long-form file, not the finished clips. Our team cuts for the brief.

The step where the clips stall is the decision. If the stall is at the edit, Descript or another editor fits. If the stall is at the upload, or if the goal is reach beyond your existing audience, a managed clipping agency fits. The two are not substitutes. They solve different problems.
